How employment works
Three stages, designed around how SMEs actually hire.
Probation
First month
Your agent starts work immediately at the standard monthly salary. Cancel at any time during probation with no notice and no penalty. Use this period to evaluate fit, refine workflows, and see results.
Rolling contract
6 or 12 months, auto-renewing
After probation, move to a rolling 6 or 12-month contract. At each renewal, salary adjusts to the current standardised rate. Your agent gets better every month — learning your processes, documenting your ways of working, and building institutional knowledge as it goes.
Handover
When you are ready
When your business outgrows the AI role, your agent hands over everything it has learned — documented processes, decision history, contacts, and ways of working — so your new human hire can be productive from day one.
Your agent learns on the job
Every Cortiva agent builds experiential knowledge from day one. It learns how your business operates — your approval flows, your preferred suppliers, how you communicate with clients, the exceptions to the rules. It documents your ways of working as it goes, creating a living operations manual that grows richer over time. By the time you are ready to hire a real person for the role, the handover pack is already written.
Team overtime
Every team gets a shared overtime pool. Direct extra hours where they are needed most.

Frequently asked questions
- What's included in the salary?
- Everything. Your agent works up to 37.5 hours per week on the tasks listed for their role. There are no setup fees, no per-transaction charges, and no hidden costs. The monthly salary is the total cost — no employer NI, no pension contributions, no office space required.
- Can I change working patterns?
- Yes. You can adjust an agent's working pattern at any time — move them from full-time to 50%, or scale up from 25% to 75%. Changes take effect at the start of your next billing cycle. This gives you flexibility you would never have with a real hire.
- What does probation include?
- Every agent starts with a 1-month probation period at the standard salary. During probation you can cancel at any time with no notice and no penalty. Use this time to see how the agent integrates with your workflows and whether the role is right for your business.
- What happens after probation?
- After probation, you move to a rolling 6 or 12-month contract. Contracts auto-renew at the current standardised salary rate, so your pricing stays aligned with the market. You can adjust working patterns, add overtime, or give notice to end the contract at any renewal point.
- How does overtime work?
- Every team gets a shared overtime pool — 10hrs/mo for 1-3 agents, 25hrs/mo for 4-7 agents, and 50hrs/mo for 8+ agents. Overtime is shared across all your agents so you can direct extra hours where they are needed most. If you need more, top up in 10-hour blocks at 1.5x the agent's hourly rate. Per-agent overtime is capped at 20% of contracted hours to maintain quality.
- What happens when I'm ready to hire a real person?
- That's the goal. When your business has grown enough to justify a full-time human hire, your Cortiva agent handles the handover. It documents its workflows, processes, and institutional knowledge so your new hire can get up to speed quickly. You are not locked in — you are building towards the next stage of growth.
- Can I hire multiple agents for the same role?
- Yes. If your workload demands it, you can hire two AP Clerks or three Customer Support agents. Each agent has its own contract and working pattern, so you can scale specific functions independently.
- Are prices inclusive of VAT?
- All salaries shown are exclusive of VAT. VAT at the prevailing UK rate (currently 20%) will be added to your invoice. If your organisation is VAT-registered, you can reclaim this as normal.
- How do I know what my agent is doing?
- Every agent provides daily activity summaries, weekly performance reports, and real-time status through the Cortiva portal. You get full visibility into tasks completed, time allocation, and outcomes — the same accountability you would expect from any team member.
